Returning to Fringe
I’m really looking forward to be returning to Fringe. It’s always a highlight of my year. I’ve attended every Fringe and am honoured to be its patron.
The first Fringe was held in 1998 as the digital revolution in production was beginning. More and more independents began using digital tools to make movies. Budgets fell, as did the barriers to production. If you were determined to make a movie no one could stop you.
Every Fringe has reflected new changes. The digital revolution in distribution began in 2003. Independents started using the Internet to sell DVDs. The barriers to distribution fell and filmmakers could now reach audiences directly for the first time.
Since Fringe began, the pace of change has been relentless. Filmmakers around the world have continued to blaze new trails. Fringe is a great opportunity to learn about the newest approaches to production and distribution. I’m excited to bring innovative models from the US and Europe and to learn about the most recent Australian successes.
